The pool owner was able to use his natural pool only for the one year after completion. Afterwards, swimming was even unthinkable for two years due to a thick carpet of algae floating on the water surface. The BIOTOP partner company’s “diagnosis” was as follows: - The property has a steep gradient - All of the surface area water from the 400 m² lawn area situated above the project drained into the pool, as no drainage pipes had been installed - The pool water analysis confirmed it: 0.45 mg of total phosphorus per liter of water prior to renovation - This is why the aquatic plants had failed to thrive - There was no capillary barrier - The separation between the swimming area and the regeneration area was too small The “cure” was to: - Install a drainage system and capillary barrier - Extend the inner granite curb stone wall upward - Renew the substrate - Create two areas as plant filters - Install two pump chambers with two submerged pumps each (20,000 l/h) - Install two curved screen skimmers underneath the wooden decking In the end the “treatment” was successful.
